Intelligent personal assistants, like Amazon Echo, was a popular gift choice this past holiday season but other than an amenable voice, those inanimate speakers don’t offer much in the aesthetics department. This year, Japan’s Gatebox is looking to change the game by combining artificial intelligence with a virtual holographic anime character of the person’s choice. According to the video, the unit will be internet-ready and compatible with a smart-home’s infrastructure. Touting their product as a virtual roommate who could text you in the middle of the day, turn on the lights before you get home, and watch TV with you, Gatebox offers what other products in the market currently don’t: a completely different dynamic made possible by a holographic image. You just can’t get that same connection with a black speaker.
