Abandoned Shopping Mall Teeming with Fishes

Jesse Rockwell captured a strange sight inside the abandoned New World Mall in Bangkok, Thailand. The mall was closed in 1997 and two years later, the roof has collapsed and let rain water pour and slowly collect inside the enclosed structure. In order to stop the mosquito problem from growing even more, locals have introduced freshwater tilapia, catfish, and koi to the unlikely pond. Cook, photographer, and writer Rockwell has lived in Thailand for almost 10 years and had heard of the local story from friends but beyond a sign that says “Strictly no entrance beyond this point,” the place has been left to decay since its closing. According to Bangkok Post, officials will be inspecting the building soon as a result of the recent attention the site has been garnering lately and will be destroying it if deemed unsafe.
