Bratz Dolls Go Through a ‘Make-Under’

Sonia Singh rescues Bratz dolls from thrift shops and gives them a more wholesome look and a new name to match: Tree Change Dolls. Stripping them of the obnoxious makeup, the Australian artist repaints their faces using acrylic paint and molds them new shoes while her mother sews and knits them more conservative outfits to match their new look. Once remade, the dolls are photographed playing out in nature to further validate their new identities. According to Singh, “My sisters and I grew up playing with second-hand dolls and home-made toys in the beautiful Tasmanian natural environment. I love the satisfaction of repairing and reusing discarded items to give them a new lease on life.” The dramatic transformations are an outright celebration of the more natural, down-to-earth look and should hopefully serve as a wake-up call to major toy manufacturers as a reminder of their target demographic.
