Slitherstition Show Snakes in a Different Light

Andrew McGibbon challenges society to take a second look at snakes with ‘Slitherstition.’ The South African photographer was intrigued by how the snake came to be the symbol of dark and evil since the beginning of time and across all cultures. According to McGibbon, “Photographed with warm light on bright colours, I am looking at their enchanting beauty and design, and their vulnerability, as creatures simply existing outside of the buckling pressure of the evil they are meant to represent.” He embarked on this project to show the cold-blooded reptiles in a different light and partially to satisfy his own curious nature. McGibbon has photographed roosters, cows and horses and finds that he is able to find out so much more about the animals through the photo shoot experience. In a span of three days, he was able to photograph a variety of snakes from constrictors to the deadly Green Mamba through the local pet store and a snake purveyor who were more than willing to put the slithering serpents in the spotlight.
