Amazing Balancing Barn on Top of a Hill

Situated in the picturesque countryside of Suffolk, England, the hotel playfully called “The Balancing Barn” is an engineering feat. Incorporating the principle of cantilevers, half of the structure sits atop a small hill while the other half hangs unsupported by anything below it. To do this, MVRDV built the sitting half with heavier materials than the floating half, thus accomplishing such an innovative venture. The fully functional hotel accommodates up to eight people with four double-bedrooms in which two have bathrooms en suite. A firm known for their ingenious design and clever architecture, it is no surprise that the unique lodging earned the creative minds of MVRDV the red dot design award (one of the world’s most prestigious design competitions).
