Art Becomes Inside a Toilet Paper Roll

A true artist always finds creativity in what many of us sees as nothing. In artist Anastassia Elias’ case, she made the mundane toilet paper roll as her canvas. By cutting small shapes out of the same color paper as the toilet paper roll and layering them within the inside using tweezers, the result is a moment magically captured and further enhanced by shining a light through it. We never thought we would use magical and toilet paper roll in the same sentence but in this case, we deem it more than appropriate. The breadth of each diorama is in the intricacy of each silhouette from the minute birds flying off into the distance to the spokes of a bicycle wheel. The Paris-based artist takes it even one step further by creating two rolls that go together such as the carnival-themed scene where half of a ferris wheel resides in one roll and the other half resides in the other roll. Elias has indeed carved a niche in the creative world and her book “Rouleaux” documents her work spanning from 2009 to 2012.
