Artist Creates a Mash-up of Religion and Social Media Through Paper Art

Carlo Fantin aims to tell a story on paper but not in the usual way. The Italian artist takes black, high quality, acid-free construction paper and meticulously hand-cuts each one using nothing but a craft knife and a detailed touch. Resembling stained glass windows, his artwork focuses mainly on Roman Catholic iconography like the repeated renditions of the Virgin Mary along with social media references such as the Twitter bird and the Facebook Thumbs Up among others. Looking to offer a layered experience, Fantin sought to have each piece look abstract close-up while a farther view reveals an image he hopes to provoke thought and speculation in each viewer.
