Carpets Made of Everyday Items
We Make Carpets, surprisingly, doesn’t make carpets…at least not in the usual sense of the word. Their creations are not made with the usual synthetic fibers and most importantly, they are not meant to be stepped on. Designers Marcia Nolte, Stijn Van Der Vleuten and visual artist Bob Waardenburg are the founding members of the art collective that designs and creates the temporary art installations using anything from pins, dried pasta, buttons, forks, and other everyday items. The trio admits there was no grand business plan when they started the partnership back in 2009 and other than knowing the size, material, and location, their work develops just as organically. According to them, “There never was a preconceived plan, like ‘from now on the three of us will make carpets’. It just happened. At the same time we had the feeling it might lead somewhere.” From mini-carpets to fit scale models to 20,000 folded papers occupying a 500 sq. meter hall, their work has been featured and commissioned in numerous exhibitions throughout the Netherlands.
