Check Out these Rare, Colored Images of 19th-Century Japan

19th-century Japan boasts of a culture that can be perhaps best described as “mystical.” It was a fascinating time in the Land of the Rising Sun, and we’re fortunate to be able to get a glimpse of what life was like back then through these amazing images. Italian-British war photographer Felice Beato moved to Yokohama in 1963, and he was able to capture everyday scenes from Edo-era Japan throughout his 14-year stay. From men peddling their wares to samurais striking a pose, this series of photos provide an authentic look at a Japan that’s a far cry from its modern form.
