Eerie Photos of Japanese Tsunami Survivors by Chaskielberg

These photos record and document the survivors of the Japanese tsunami and earthquake of 2011. Argentinian photographer Alejandro Chaskielberg took photos of the fishing town of Otsuchi. 60-foot tall waves assaulted and demolished 60% of the town. When Chaskielberg visited Otsuchi he discovered debris and demolished places and homes. He photographed the townspeople in his “Otsuchi Future Memory” series. Chaskielberg captured them in their demolished homes during the night. And applied black and white long exposure. He found decayed photographs in the ruins and used the color palette to color his photos. He says of his work, “It’s a reflection on the tragedy as a whole—the losses, the memory—and my way of seeing the world. These historic images are the bridge to the past I create through the use of colors…These photographs speak to the way the Otsuchi inhabitants decided to record their lives. From my viewpoint, I try to build a story about the city and its people.”
