Flower House Project Aims to Teach Sustainability

Lisa Waud adorns the walls and rooms of an abandoned house overlooking the lanes of a busy highway with fresh flowers and foliage as a preview for an ambitious art installation project set for October this year. The Michigan-based florist plans to fill a 16-room house she purchased for $500 at auction with American-grown blossoms and plants to send a powerful message about repurposing abandoned spaces and turning them into an environmentally responsible and thriving piece of land. Inspired by art installations of Christo and Jeanne-Claude and by a 2012 Dior show, Waud hopes to open the Flower House project to the public from October 16th through the 18th in hopes of spreading the word to the rest of the community. Afterwards, the house, along with another one she purchased at auction, will be deconstructed and the lot turned into a functional flower farm for her business Pot & Box.
