Frank Gehry’s Brown Paper Bag Building

For lack of better words, many are describing the University of Technology Sydney’s new business school a brown paper bag that’s been karate-chopped in half. Designed by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry, the ‘brown paper bag’ building is his first structure to be built in Australia and despite its looks, there is functionality behind the design. The slight folds of the building encourage fluid movement between spaces and encourages social collaboration and networking among students and faculty. According to Gehry himself, “It’s a container, maybe it’s a brown paper bag, but it is flexible on the inside. There’s a lot of room for change and movement which I think in the world today is essential.” Some of Gehry’s notable works include the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao Spain, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, and the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto among others.
