Glass Meets Concrete in Ben Young’s Amazing Sculptures

Ben Young brings the ocean indoors with Broken Liquid, a series of glass and stone sculptures often with a seafaring object serving as a focal point. Using the only matter that can mimic the fluidity and transparency of water, the Australian-based artist is completely self-taught and has been handcrafting each sculpture for over 10 years, from sketching the initial design to the finished product. Growing up in the Bay of Plenty in New Zealand and originally a boat builder by trade, Young naturally gathers inspiration from nature and water, using a glass-cutter to shape each layer before sanding them down. The gradation of each glass layer set against the natural stone gives a rare glimpse of an otherwise hidden world captured perfectly by each unique piece.
