Nostalgic Carnival Rides Captured in Motion

Roger Vail puts a spin on what many of us deem as an essential part of childhood summer, a night at the carnival. The American photographer has been capturing the nostalgic images of some of our favorite rides at fairs since the 1970s using long-exposure photography with a vintage view camera sans flash or image manipulation so prevalent in modern photography nowadays. Symbolic thrill rides set against the static background and the vivid backdrop of the fairground lights create a kaleidoscopic visual that is nothing short of magical. Vail’s photos are on exhibit at the Joseph Bellows Gallery in La Jolla, California, until 22 August.
