People and Parks Come First on Park(ing) Day 2014
Last month, revelers all around the world participated in the annual event called PARK(ing) Day. Always taking place on the third Friday of September, artists, designers and the general public are invited to transform metered parking spots into pop-up parks for a day. It all started back in 2005 when art and design company Rebar transformed a metered spot into a tiny public park in a section of downtown San Francisco targeted especially for lacking public open space. The temporary park was rolled up and hauled away within the 2 hour limit of the parking meter but the project has expanded into a global initiative since then. The project now follows an open-source model where organizers identify specific needs and values of the town where it is being organized and design the temporary displays after the community’s vision.
