Provocative Propaganda-Inspired Art

Reminiscent of her Communist East Germany upbringing, Kathrin Longhurst paints propaganda-inspired posters in the series ‘Children of the Revolution.’ The provocative and powerful images of helmeted women are a stark juxtaposition of the nature of propaganda art. Drawing on her exposure to images of strong females advertising social adherence and political messages by the German Democratic Republic, Longhurst portrays fearless women embracing their sexuality and femininity much unlike the conventional ideals of the socialist regime of how females should behave and look at the time.
