Renovating With Shapes and Colors

Though the exterior of this house in suburban Tokyo looks pretty run-of-the-mill, the interior is anything but. Originally, the structure was built as a two-story apartment and the owner wanted to demolish and build a single story house on the site instead. In comes Kochi Architect’s Studio with a better and more creative renovation solution by using the existing frame and gutting the inside to make it flow like a single-story house. Creating an expansive main room at the heart of the building and using paint and shapes to create a sort of optical illusion, the Japanese firm was able to transform the space into a vibrant, diverse, and dynamic environment for the entire family.
