The Flight of the Devil Rays

Devil rays glide underwater gracefully but those quasi-wings also lend themselves to some serious flapping out of the water. All 9 species of devil rays exhibit ‘breaching,’ where they leap out of the water to catch some serious air while traveling in large groups. Though some have been seen to leap up to 10 feet high, no one yet knows why the species choose to demonstrate their spectacular aerial capabilities.
