The Magpie Who Thinks It’s a Dog

Cameron Bloom has been shooting captivating images from mining to portraiture all over the globe for 20 years but for this project, not only does it hit closer to home but it’s also become personal. The Sydney-based photographer documents a magpie’s journey into capturing his family’s hearts on the Instagram account @penguinthemagpie. Bloom’s son Noah found the bird abandoned at just a few weeks old and after nursing the magpie back to health and setting her free, the bird who is playfully named after a different species of her kind, sticks around the family’s home in her own free will. Behaving like a pet of the furry kind, Penguin greets the kids when they get home from school, dines with the family, and even manages to sneak in a few naps and cuddles in bed in the early mornings.
