These Hanging Chairs Display Expert Weaving Techniques

Porky Hefer‘s chairs are more than a set of whimsical seats to snuggle up in but rather a finely crafted set of collectibles made by artisans from his hometown. The hanging element of ‘Monstera Deliciosa Vol 1‘ reflects the underwater theme as a way to simulate floating in the water while the ceiling represents the top of the ocean. According to him: “My pieces get people to think about nature, and its fragility, and make them consider how to protect it.” The sea-life inspired ‘nest environments’ is the South African designer’s way of highlighting the traditional weaving skills of Cape Town’s craftsmen whose techniques he deems invaluable for future generations. The collection is featured at Southern Guild Gallery in Cape Town until February 5, 2016.
