Women Driven to Carry Guns

Photojournalist Sebastiano Tomada puts the spotlight on a handful of women who grew tired of sitting on the sidelines while the war in Syria drags on two years running. With the Syrian conflict growing in intensity, a group of women operating under the Free Syrian Army based in Aleppo has decided to pick up arms to join the fight against the Assad regime. In his “Women of War” series, each woman is covered from head to toe as customary with some carrying a child with one hand while the other holds a gun. Ranging in age from 16 to 72 and from students to widowers, each has a different story to tell but are united and weary of the poverty, displacement, and mistreatment that the regime has placed on them and their family.
