Abstract Snow Drawings by Sonja Hinrichsen

Sonja Hinrichsen and 50 volunteers create a massive artistic impression on a frozen lake in Colorado for her ongoing community arts project, Snow Drawings. After attending a seminar about water issues of the Yampa River in Northwestern Colorado, the German artist mobilized and outfitted volunteers with snowshoes to create a rendering of the original Yampa river’s flow. The snowshoe performers entered the frozen lake from 4 different directions to represent the 4 tributaries and were asked to imagine, behave, and mimic the flow of water during the 4 hours it took to finish. As with the other large-scale pieces in the series, Hinrichsen only gets to see and capture the final images in its entirety from above the morning after its completion. Below are some images from this year’s We are the Water project as well as projects from previous years.
