Boa Mistura Adds Life to Bland Facades
The people of La Colonia de las Américas received a special renovation that changed not only their home’s facades but also brought their community together. Located on the outskirts of Querétaro, Mexico, the neighborhood is set on cliffs that tower over two major highways and is seen by thousands of commuters everyday. The project is the brainchild of Boa Mistura, an urban art group of 5 artists based in Madrid, Spain who use street art as a way to ‘give the world its color back.’ The group’s mission garnered volunteers from all over Mexico who all took part in painting houses, stores, and cantinas. Drawing from patterns that identify the identity of the Mexican culture, the colors were inspired by the textiles of the indigenous Otomi people and the mesmerizing prints and patterns of the Calacas, the Huichol Art and Alebrijes. The second phase of the project will begin in September 2014 and continues until all 1,074 buildings have been painted.
