The Unexpected Oasis: Guelta d’Archei
There’s a peculiar and unexpected oasis deep in the Sahara desert. Guelta d’Archei is a guelta, a type of wetland formed when underground water in lowland depressions spills to the surface and creates permanent pools and reservoirs. Located in the Ennedi Plateau, in northeastern Chad, the space provides a haven for camels needing a drink, travelers needing some relief from the desert heat, and for a small group of surviving Nile crocodiles.
